On April 21, 2022, the United States announced a key step toward fulfilling President Biden’s commitment to welcome Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion. Uniting for Ukraine provides a pathway for Ukrainian citizens and their immediate family members who are outside the United States to come to the United States and stay temporarily in a 2 year period of parole.
In the span of 10 months, Krystyna and Maksym Samoilenko and their two sons, Mikhail and Denys, have been through a lifetime’s worth of heartache and loss.
It all started in the early morning hours on Feb. 24 roughly seven and a half miles outside of Kiev, Ukraine. The couple awoke to their house shaking as if they were experiencing an earthquake.

Form I-134, Declaration of Financial Support must be filled out by U.S. sponsors to show the U.S. government that you are able and willing to support a non-U.S. citizen financially during that person’s temporary stay in the United States. Uniting for Ukraine allows online filing of the I-134 form by a sponsor located in the United States, and there is no filing fee.
The DHS website says the application process will be “fairly quick” but doesn’t currently provide a timeline for completion. In May 2022, applications were reportedly approved within days.
